R 44 RAVEN
Robinson Helicopter Company has established
a solid reputation for producing affordable
helicopters engineered to a superior standard.
The R44 Raven fully delivers on this reputation.
The Raven incorporates as standard equipment
newly developed hydraulic flight controls,
which eliminate stick shake and control forces
in flight. Other improvements include adjustable
pedals to increase pilot comfort, and new
elastomeric tail-rotor teeter hinges, which
further reduce the R44's already low maintenance
requirements. The Raven also sports a cleaner,
updated paint scheme making it immediately
distinguishable.
The aerodynamic design optimizes speed and
efficiency allowing for a high cruise speed
of 130 mph. And, the average fuel consumption
is only 15 gallons per hour.
Robinson's engineering emphasis on quality
and reliability continues to be recognized.
Confirming this reliability, NTSB statistics
show that Robinson helicopters (both R22 and
R44) have fewer accidents due to aircraft
or engine failure than other light helicopters.
The R44's exceptional design and proven performance
make it ideal for a variety of private, business,
and utility applications. To allow extended
flight over water, the R44 is available with
either fixed or emergency pop-out floats (R44
Clipper). Also, the R44 is available fully
equipped for law enforcement activities (R44
Police Helicopter) or for live, television
news broadcast (R44 Newscopter).
R44 CLIPPER
R44 Clipper, with either fixed utility or
pop out floats installed, can fly with added
safety over water. Advanced float design and
a low center of gravity enhance the Clipper's
stability on rough seas.
The fixed utility float installation adds
approximately 50 pounds to the R44's empty
weight. Cruise speed is reduced by less than
10 knots. The pop-out float installation adds
about 65 pounds to the empty weight but does
not reduce its cruise speed below a standard
R44.
Unlike some emergency floats, the Clipper's
pop out floats have the same buoyancy as the
fixed utility floats. Either float configuration
allows take-offs following a precautionary
or emergency water landing.
LOW MAINTENANCE
Reliable Engine: The dependable Lycoming 0-540 engine is derated
from 260 to 205 HP (225 HP take-off) for long
life and reliability.
Patented Rotor Design: Tri-hinge rotor eliminates lag hinges, dampers,
and hydraulic struts. Stainless steel main
rotor blades resist corrosion and have thick
leading edges to minimize erosion.
Inspections: No scheduled maintenance, other than oil
changes, is required between 100-hour or annual
inspections.
Lubrication: Teflon-lined, elastomeric, or sealed bearings
eliminate most lubrication requirements.
Couplings: Maintenance-free flexible couplings are used
in place of universal joints or gear couplings
in the main and tail drive systems.
Controls: Primary controls are actuated by maintenance-free
bellcranks and push-pull tubes, eliminating
the need for control cables and pulleys.
Worldwide Service: There are over 200 authorized Robinson service
centers located worldwide. They offer certified
Robinson parts and equipment. Professionals
at every service center are trained and dedicated
to meeting Robinson's stringent quality standards.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
NEW! Hydraulic Power Controls: Designed and manufactured in-house by Robinson,
the hydraulic system completely eliminates
cyclic shake and control forces in the Raven.
The system incorporates the latest advances
in sealing and precision manufacturing resulting
in enhanced reliability and reduced maintenance.
Pistol Grip Cyclic Controls: Ergonomic grips incorporate two-position
trigger switches for intercom and transmit.
Grips also have buttons for storing and switching
COM frequencies.
RPM Governor: No more throttle twisting; governor automatically
controls engine RPM during all normal operations.
Rotor Brake: By allowing the pilot to stop the rotor quickly,
the overhead rotor brake greatly reduces shutdown
time and chances of injury to ground personnel.
Advance Warning Devices: The instrument panel includes warning lights
to indicate: low fuel, excessive main gearbox
temperature, main gearbox chip, tail gearbox
chip, low oil pressure, low voltage, low RPM
(with a sounding horn), rotor brake engaged,
engine fire, and starter engaged.
Automatic Clutch Engagement: Start-up procedure is simplified and chance
of an overspeed is reduced.
Carb Heat Assist: Pilot workload is reduced by automatically
adding carb heat when collective is lowered
and reducing carb heat when collective is
raised.
COMFORT & CONVENIENCE
NEW! Adjustable Pedals: Right side pilot pedals have been redesigned
to allow two inches of fore-aft adjustment.
Visibility: With comfortable 2+2 seating, front and rear
seats all have wide, unobstructed views. No
center bulkhead or post impedes visibility.
Large windows in each door allow clear sideward
vision from all seats.
Low Noise Level: Heavy-duty crossover muffler, low tail rotor
tip speed, and large, cambered fin to off-load
the tail rotor make the R44 a "community-friendly'
helicopter. Thick acoustical foam achieves
surprisingly low cabin noise levels.
T-Bar Cyclic: Uncomfortable stick between knees is eliminated.
Cabin entry and exit is simplified.
Concealed Baggage Compartments: Each seat hinges up for access to storage
areas for carry-on bags, briefcases, and other
belongings. Each new Robinson R44 comes with
a custom Robinson travel bag for added convenience.
Heating and Ventilation: An adjustable heater distributes heat to
all four seats. Fresh-air vents in the cabin
nose and each door provide generous ventilation
for all passengers without adding excessive
noise.
Voice Activated Intercom: Passengers are able to enjoy normal conversation
during doors-on flights.
Off-Airport Landings: High-mounted tail rotor and raised exhaust
enhance safety during off-airport landings.
Two-Bladed Main Rotor: Requires only one-third the hangar space
of a multi-bladed rotor.
STATE-OF-THE-ART-MANUFACTURING
In June of 1994, Robinson Helicopter Company
moved into a new 260,000 square foot manufacturing
facility at the Torrance Airport.
The factory was built specifically to Robinson's
demanding manufacturing requirements. It is
equipped with highly advanced machinery, including
many computer numerically controlled (CNC)
machines capable of consistently producing
parts to exacting tolerances. The factory
also contains an engine overhaul area where
two dynamometer test cells are used for precise
engine testing.
Robinson was among the first American aerospace
companies to meet the rigorous quality requirements
and be awarded ISO 9001 certification for
design, manufacture, and servicing of helicopters.
A full delivery center is located onsite,
including a classroom where safety and maintenance
courses developed by Robinson are offered
on a regular basis.
